Why Bedrock?

The majority of Harris Academies are in areas of high deprivation, with some schools that have as high as 60% pupil premium and up to 46% EAL. Therefore many learners may come from backgrounds where they may not have bookshelves filled with books, or may have parents who have quite low literacy themselves. Therefore they needed a literacy solution that would work to improve vocabulary for these learners whilst challenging higher achieving learners.

Bedrock’s impact

Bedrock has been fundamental in helping to meet the needs of all learners throughout the academies, from those with low literacy skills to very high achievers, by providing direct vocabulary instruction at an individual level with a personalised approach.

We have had remarkable success with some of our English as an Additional Language students, they have really shone with this and they love that empowerment of learning new words.

Rebecca Hickey

Secondary Director at Harris Federation

Harris Federation encompasses 32 secondary academies across London and Essex. These academies support many learners from socio-economically deprived areas, with some having up to 60% Pupil Premium learners, and up to 46% EAL learners.

Literacy is a key priority throughout all schools in the federation having been identified as an excellent 'lever for social mobility', which is vital when teaching learners from PP, EAL and SEND backgrounds to level the playing field.

Bedrock has been fundamental in helping to meet the needs of all learners throughout the academies, from those with low literacy skills to very high achievers, by providing direct vocabulary instruction at an individual level with a personalised approach.
