How can Bedrock help my school?

Bedrock offers Bedrock Vocabulary, a nine-year digital literacy and vocabulary curriculum designed for students of all abilities in KS2, KS3 and KS4 (Years 3-11), and Bedrock GCSE Literature schemes, a growing range of units to support learning of specific texts and terms for KS4 students. A student’s ability to understand a text largely depends on their ability to understand the language used. Research suggests that as a student progresses through school, they need to be adding at least 3,000 words to their vocabulary per year if they are to keep up with challenging texts across the curriculum.

Bedrock in primary schools

Linked to the National Curriculum, our comprehensive Bedrock Vocabulary learning scheme supports the early development of strong reading skills and a broad vocabulary and helps you answer questions Ofsted may ask about your literacy teaching under its new Education Inspection Framework.

As they progress through it, your KS2 students explore a wide range of engaging cross-curricular fiction and non-fiction topics including the solar system, wonders of Egypt and the hot air balloon.

They are exposed to progressively more challenging vocabulary, in line with the pace of their individual progress. The ambitious words we teach include ‘gradually’, ‘apparent’ and ‘comply’ (see more detail on How does Bedrock work?); the benefits of this word-rich environment sow the seeds for success in KS3, KS4 and beyond.

When it comes to preparing for the Year 6 SATs – in which around 20% of questions in reading papers focus on vocabulary, specifically Tier 2 words – vocabulary becomes even more crucial. In previous KS2 SATs reading papers, we see these examples (in bold) of Tier 2 vocabulary:

The cat broke the universal rule of tree climbing. She resettled on the branch, considering her options.

Students of all abilities make strong progress with Bedrock Vocabulary, with those requiring SEN support typically learning the most new words.

Bedrock in secondary schools

Our Bedrock Vocabulary curriculum continues to be linked to the National Curriculum during KS3 and KS4 and can support questions Ofsted may ask about how your school teaches literacy.

Many of our schools find a particular advantage of Bedrock is the ability it allows students to learn independently and at their own pace, either in school or as homework; as a self-marking curriculum, it also saves you valuable time.

KS3 students are helped become GCSE-ready with a focus on cross-curricular Tier 2 academic verbs to help them feel confident about new texts. As they progress through our blocks at their own pace they will encounter fiction and non-fiction topics such as the legend of Troy, wacky and wonderful scientists and apartheid, and new vocabulary including ‘controversy’, ‘audacious’, ‘irascible’ and ‘punitive’.

By KS4 they will learn advanced tier 2 vocabulary that’s critical for success in their GCSE studies right across the curriculum. The rise of social media, the Berlin Wall and the climate crisis are among the topics they will study, with academic verbs taught including ‘formulate’, ‘diagnose’, ‘decipher’ and ‘juxtapose’.

In previous GCSE papers across the curriculum, we see these examples (in bold) of Tier 2 vocabulary:

The World Health Organisation defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. (Example Biology text)

In addition to our core Bedrock Vocabulary curriculum, for KS4 students we also offer the first of our GCSE Literature schemes, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde English Literature GCSE – a comprehensive, interactive scheme of learning that covers the assessment objectives for GCSE English Literature and is designed to complement students’ classroom studies.
