Language is the gateway to the curriculum

Bedrock supports three literacy goals for schools and districts.

Build vocabulary and knowledge

Give learners explicit, contextualized opportunities to develop the language they encounter across the school day.

Strengthen reading comprehension

Address the language-comprehension side of reading once students have foundational decoding skills.

Make literacy visible

Give educators insight into student learning and progress so that literacy decisions can be better informed.

English learners

Make academic language more accessible for English learners

English learners are simultaneously learning new concepts and the language used to express them. Bedrock teaches academic vocabulary explicitly and in context, and Bedrock Strata adapts learning to each student, so language is less of a barrier to learning.

Key benefits

  • Explicit vocabulary instruction: Students are taught academic vocabulary directly, rather than being expected to pick it up along the way.
  • Adaptive learning pathways: Bedrock Strata gives each student a personalized path to the same learning goal. Tasks change in format and challenge, not just pace, so every student gets the right level of support without being singled out.
  • Vocabulary taught in meaningful context: Students meet new words in meaningful context, so they see how language is used in their learning.

Science of Reading

Take the Science of Reading beyond foundational skills

Bedrock explicitly develops the vocabulary, language, and knowledge students need as they move from learning to read to reading to learn.

  1. Foundational reading: Students learn to decode text accurately and fluently.
  2. Language + vocabulary: Bedrock builds the academic vocabulary, language, and knowledge behind comprehension.
  3. Reading to learn: Students understand increasingly complex texts across their subjects.
  4. Curriculum access: Students participate fully in learning in every subject.

When students arrive with the language already taught, teachers can spend class time on discussion, inquiry, and deeper learning.
