Why Bedrock?

We saw that it was online and algorithm led. We also saw that it claimed to have a big impact on PP and Literacy. It was also affordable and within budget.

How was it implemented?

Students have a lesson once a fortnight, but it is also set weekly as homework on Go4Schools. Pupils that come on top for their classes for points and time/effort spend are given a Bedrock postcard that can be used as a lunchtime pass. At the end of each half-term, pupils are also given Bedrock branded certificates. Head of English or form tutors are contacting parents of pupils that are not engaging with the extra homework.

What impact have you seen?

Some really good engagement from SEN students. So far this year, SEND students are outperforming non-SEND by 35% and PP are outperforming non-PP by 29%.

Top tips for other teachers using Bedrock

  • Get the students used to using the My History tab, so they can monitor their own progress in terms of lessons completed and so on.
  • Have students close down all other tabs, particularly Google, as the temptation to look up what they don't know, rather than learn it as they go through the lesson (and as a result never really learn it) is too strong in most of them.
  • Use headphones. You would not believe the number of students who sit through audio playing without actually listening to the audio, then are surprised when they're confused by what follows.
  • Attention to detail - iterate and reiterate to students that they need to check what they typed is what they think they typed, and it is what is being asked of them. Bedrock could be asking about clauses, but they're still expecting the correct capitals for proper nouns, etc.
